The Condor Lagoon
The Condor Lagoon or Mummy Lagoon is a lagoon of about 1 km² in length that is located in the department of Amazonas in the Andes of northern Peru. It is located at an altitude of 2600 meters above sea level, 93 km from the capital of the province, Chachapoyas, and a day’s walk or 45 km from the town of Leimebamba, in the homonymous district.
Mausoleums
Around this lagoon is an archaeological site, discovered in 1997. It includes mausoleums that housed funerary bundles with diverse offerings (gold objects and crafts). The more than 200 recovered mummies have been identified as belonging to the Chachapoyas culture (ca. 800-1470), Chachapoya-Inca (ca. 1470-1532) and the early Colonial (ca. 1532-1570) .
The 200 mummies are currently on display at the Leymebamba Site Museum, having stayed until July 2006 at the Technisches Museum Wien (Vienna).
HOURS AND KILOMETERS TO BE DONE DURING OUR VISIT:
- Walk and ride to the Laguna de los Cóndores is 37 kilometers from the community of Leymebamba to the Lagoon and equal return distance, total in hours is 10 one way.
- On this hike there is an unevenness of 1600 meters.
